SIPTU says actual work deaths far exceed official figure
SIPTU says the actual number of work-related deaths in Ireland far exceeds the official figures.
The union is calling on the Government to acknowledge International Labour Organisation statistics, which estimate around 1,400 such deaths in Ireland every year.
The official figures average around 60 fatalities a year, but don't include deaths that result from work-related illnesses and diseases.
They also exclude deaths caused in work-related road accidents.
SIPTU wants the Government to make it mandatory for employers to report all work-related illnesses and diseases that cause more than three days' absence from work.
