Exciting spring at the Opera House

One of the highlights of Cork Opera House's spring season will be its own production of the classic musical West Side Story from March 19 to April 3.

THE Cork Opera House has unveiled details of its exciting spring season programme for 2010 with a plethora of events to satisfy audiences of all ages and tastes.
After a winter of floods, freezes and recession the venue is welcoming the new season with more than fifty concerts, plays and shows over the months ahead.
Opera House executive director Gerry Barnes said the line up represents the very best in entertainment with "something for everyone". "The line-up represents a veritable smorgasbord of drama, musicals, concerts, film, dance, opera and family fare," said Mr Barnes.
"Looking over the events taking place in the Opera House over the coming months one can see there is genuinely something to please every palate," he added.
One of the undoubted highlights of the season will be the venue's own production of the all time classic musical West
Side Story from March 19 to April 3.
Directed by Brian Flynn, the creative force behind productions including the hugely successful Michael Collins the Musical, the production will feature an allstar cast of 40 and a 20piece orchestra.
Following its hugely successful seasons at the Gaiety Theatre and in London's West End the stage version of the celluloid epic The Shawshank Redemption will run for seven performances from Friday, April 23.
The show, an unforgettable story of courage, friendship and hope over adversity, has received standing ovations and rave reviews from critics.
The ever popular Menopause – The Musical, starring Twink, Linda Martin and Flo McSweeney, which is currently running at the venue until next Saturday is just one of a number of musicals set to grace its stage during ten spring season.
Other one to watch out for is the exuberant rock opera Rent which will run for four nights from March 3. Boasting a talented young cast of 40 the show will also feature a live band performing the powerful, life-affirming songs that garnered it multiple Tony awards during the 1990s.
Younger audiences can look forward to the return of the Lambert Theatre Company from March 10 and the family musical Honk – The Ugly Duckling Story over the Easter holiday.
The hallowed stage ay the Opera House will also play host to an impressive array of concerts over the coming months including performances by The Furey's and Davy Arthur, The Kodo Drummers, Johnny McEvoy, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Jack L., Paul Brady, Tony Kenny and The Priests.
The Half Moon Theatre will also host a number of exciting events including a Beckett double bill with the Gare St Lazare Players on March 4 and 5 and screenings of ten independent films courtesy of the newly formed Cork Cine Club.
