Shoestring dates are set

Thursday February 18 2010

THE dates have been finalised for the staging of the Shoestring Theatre Company's 2010 production of 'The Salvage Shop' by Jim Nolan and Bernard Farrell's 'I Do Not Like Thee Dr Fell'.

The Salvage Shop will be presented at the Schoolyard Theatre starting on Sunday, February 21 and run on the 22nd, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 28th and on the 1st and 2nd March.

Padraig Hastings, a newcomer to the Shoestring group, heads up a strong cast for this excellent play. He plays the lead role of Sylvie Tansey in 'The Salvage Shop', which is set in the seaside town of Garris where Sylvie is the maestro of the local brass band. He is reluctant to relinquish his position and this leads to a fraught relationship with his son Eddie, who is played by William Lyons.

Mary O'Sullivan, last seen as Aunt Lizzie in the Shoestring's production of 'Philadelphia Here I Come' plays Rita while another newcomer, Michelle Lehane, plays Katie. Michael Dorgan plays Stephen Kearney and Ray Scanlon has the role of Costello.

The consoling force of opera and the music of the band provide the soundtrack for the ambitions, great and small, of the several characters in Jim Nolan's touching play and for their inabilities and efforts to connect as they negotiate ways to salve the wounds of a family and the sores of a community.

The production is directed by Kevin O'Shea and on completion of the Charleville run the play will travel on the festival circuit in a bid to qualify the Shoestring team for the All-Ireland drama final in Athlone in May.

The curtain goes up at the Schoolyard on group's second play 'I Do Not Like Thee Dr. Fell,' on Sunday 21st March and continues on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th and other dates to be announced. Directed by Breda Lynch the play promises to be a riot of laughter and a tonic for the recession.

Booking for both productions is at 087-2530955.
