ONE of the most exciting traditional Irish bands to have hit the scene for decades, Beoga, will bring their special sound to The Pavilion in Cork for one very special night on Thursday, September 30.

The gig is one of a number taking place over the city as part of the annual Beamish Cork Folk Festival, which will see more than 50 gigs take place in venues across the city over the final weekend of September.

Beoga are a five-piece band from Antrim who formed in 2002 after the musicians jammed together for an impromptu session at the All-Ireland Fleadh.

The newly formed band continued to perform together regularly and in 2004 released their debut album A Lovely Madness to widespread critical acclaim in Ireland. The following year they were nominated by the influential Irish Music Magazine for their best newcomers award.

While the bedrock of their style lies firmly within the Irish tradition, the band are not afraid explore other genres incorporating bluesy riffs and New Orleans style jazz into their sound.

Their unique interpretation of the trad style is no more apparent than on their 2007 album Mischief, which is widely regarded as one of the top Iris albums of the past decade.

The band is also much in demand on the live circuit, having performed at festivals across Europe and the US and at the prestigious BBC Last Night at the Proms.

Their 2009 album The Incident, with its blend of passion, energy and vitality, has further cemented their reputation as a band not to be missed.

Tickets for the gig at the Pavilion cost €17.50 from the venue or online at www.tickets.ie
