2009 — a year when the world we knew fell apart

Thursday January 14 2010

KILCORNEY REVIEW: As we face into 2010 let us for a few minutes look back at 2009 in Kilcorney.

2009 was the year that the world that we knew fell apart. Unemployment figures went through the roof, many people learned the sad fact that there is no such thing as free money, the banks came a begging looking for our money to bail them out.

The weather matched the mood of the year with rain, wind, snow and ice and no sunshine.

January saw the AGM of Kilcorney Bowling Club which was held at Caroline's Bar, for them the highlight of 2008 was the hosting of the European Dutch Moore Championships in Rathcoole.

Kilcorney Communtiy Gym reopened after the Christmas break giving people a much needed reason to loose a few extra pounds. Kilcorney Social Centre was also a hive of activity with set dancing, Tuesday club and baby and toddler group back in action.

March saw a very important meeting held in the Kilcorney Social Centre to discuss supports for the elderly in our locality and also to discuss Leader funding for the next few years. IRD Duhallow were awarded over €10m to distribute to businesses, community groups and individuals in rural areas for a wide range of activities eligible under the scheme.

April saw large numbers of people attending the Easter Ceremonies and it was pleasing to see the large numbers of people who took part in the century old tradition of paying visits to the graveside of Fr. John O Mullane who was buried in Kilcorney Old Cemetery on October 19th 1891, with many cures being attributed to his intercession since then.

For local author Liz Lyons, April was a red letter month with the publication of her first Novel 'Bare Foot Over Stones' which was an acclaimed success and we are all eagerly looking forward to her next publication.

May saw the AGM of the Kilcorney Development Association which saw a very productive return for the past year. It was however the Kilcorney Feis which was the big story in May. The Feis reached a Milestone on the weekend of May 30-31 with its staging of its 100th edition. For about the only weekend of the year the sun shone down and crowds packed the village on both the Saturday and the Sunday.

July saw the staging of the Annual Kilcorney Angling and Leisure Group duck race at Moll Carthy's Bridge and this year the proceeds were in aid of the Kilcorney Community Playground and as usual a great evenings fun was had by young and old alike.

July 5th saw the staging of the 3rd Annual Horse Fair day.

July also saw the annual Mass in the Kilcorney Cemetery with a very large attendance present. This Mass is a chance for people to put their busy lives aside for a few hours to remember those who have gone before us and also to remember where we will one day go.

August saw a big influx of visitors to our community a time to meet old friends and a chance to make some new ones.

September saw wind turbines pass on their way to the site of the new Boggeragh Mountain Wind Farm Development. This development costing over €100m will have a total of 19 wind turbines and will supply the electrical needs of 30,000 householders. In a year of so many bad stories this was one of the great projects of this year that will go on giving for many years to come.

October saw the winter programmes kick off in both the Community Centre and the Social Centre. October was also a great month for two organisations in Kilcorney as Kilcorney Development Association received a grant of €500 from the National Lottery to promote a healthy eating programme and Kilcorney Angling and Leisure Group received a grant of €2,000 from Airtricity for further development of our local walkways and waterways.

This month saw our community plunged into sadness when news broke of the passing of Peg Dennehy. Peg who has written these notes for a long number of years was one of those people who made Kilcorney the wonderful Community that it is today. Her passing has left a void in this community that will be very hard to fill.

During November €1,160 was raised as a result of a Coffee Morning in aid of Marymount Hospice held in our local Social Centre.

The month of December saw Kilcorney Women's Resource stage two events with a Christmas theme in our Social Centre. These functions which were very well attended helped put people in the mood to celebrate the festive season. Despite the very poor weather, large crowds attended all the ceremonies in our local churches which brought home the through meaning of the season of Christmas.

As we come to the end of this review let us remember those people who have passed away in our Community over the past year, to their families and friends we send them our thoughts and prayers. Let us hope 2010 brings a change to our economy, health and happiness to each and every one and a little bit of fine weather. DROMTARIFFE GAA SOCIAL will take place at the Wallis Arms Hotel Millstreet on Friday January 29. Tickets are on sale at €25 each and are available from Derrinagree Post Office, Rathcoole Post Office or from Club Officers.

Music will be provided on the evening by the Celts. On the night the club will celebrate 125 years in existence and special guests on the night will be the victorious Minor Hurlers who won the Duhallow Minor Championship for the first time.
