AROUND MALLOW: Local kids to help out Haiti appeal

LOCAL students from the Mallow Kumon Centre will be joining with students from around Ireland to raise money for Haiti.

At all Kumon Centres during the week commencing March 8 children will be challenged to race against time as they complete as many sums as they can in ten minutes. People will collect money for the marathon which is set to be an exciting event for all involved.

HAVEN is a charity that is organising 250 students to go to Haiti for Built It Week on April 25.

The volunteers will be helping to build homes, communities, facilities and hope to some of the poorest people in the Western hemisphere.

MALLOW CLUB: Mallow Field Club will hold their AGM on Tuesday, March 9 in the Social Services Centre Mallow at 8pm.This will be followed by a short video presentation entitled From Mallow to Tallow given by Pat Heaven. All are welcome to attend.

FIELD SPEAKEASY TOASTMASTERS MALLOW: The Speakeasy Toastmasters Club has been in existence for seventeen years.

The club emerged from trial toastmaster meetings held in Mallow in 1992, and was officially established, or chartered, the following year. Since then members of the Speakeasy Club have performed exceptionally at competition level and have held leadership roles in the Toastmaster organisation.

Speakeasy Toastmaster members have assisted in establishing other Toastmaster clubs, including the Failte Club in Charleville and the Galtees Club in Mitchelstown. Toastmasters provides a world of experience, offering development of communication skills, leadership abilities and as an added bonus, enjoyment and friendship.

All this is waiting for you at the Hibernian Hotel, Mallow on the first and third Thursday of each month and all meetings are open to non-members. The next meeting will take place tonight. GET WELL WISHES TO ROBERT: Get Well Wishes To Robert:

Best wishes are sent to Robert Mills from Lisheen Row who is a current patient at Brid Haven Nursing Home in Spa Glen. Robert who is a very popular member of the Mallow community has worked tirelessly over the years for many good causes and was always available for church gate collections for many charitable groups.

He was also a volunteer at the Meals On Wheels and in various social services activities. His presence is greatly missed and we wish him a speedy recovery. MICKY RETIRES: After over 45 years of fighting fires and assisting at heart breaking road crashes Michael (Micky) Nugent has hung up his helmet as a member of the Mallow Fire Service. He joined in April 1964 and over the years he attended many emergencies along with household names including his late father Jack, Freddy Culloty, Con Mullane, Freddy Franklin, Christy McCarthy, Robin McCarthy, Billy Mangan, Gody Endersen, Tommy Tarrant, Mossie Coughlan, Denis Sheehan and former fire officer John Fleming. Micky served in the service with distinction when the fire station was based at Shoulder's Lane, New Road and at the new headquarters at Annabella. We wish him a happy retirement. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY: International Women's Day will be celebrated in Mallow on Monday, March 8 at the Mercy Centre.

Le Chéile Family Resource Centre wish to invite women's group's or group's of women to come along on the day and join in the celebration of International Women's Day. There is no fee for attending on the day but donations in aid of YANA the North Cork Domestic Violence project will be accepted. Some refreshments will be provided but each group is invited to bring food to share. The Marie Keating Foundation Mobile Health Information Unit will be present on the day to offer advice and information on all key cancers and the Marie Keating Foundation Nurse will also be pleased to talk to people about any health related issues.

Aoife Collins from the HSE will be speaking on the importance of cervical screening and Samantha Sandrone will be demonstrating aromatherapy massage.

There will also be a talk by Paddy Lane from St Vincent De Paul. Bingo and a raffle will also be part of the days entertainment. Please contact Noreen or Sharon at Le Chéile Family Resource Centre on 022 42439 if your group would attend.

to SPECIAL OLYMPICS: A Coffee Morning with Spot Prizes and a Raffle will be held in the Hibernian Hotel in Mallow on Thursday, March 11 from 10.30am to 12.30pm in aid of the Mallow Special Olympic Group. This is a fund raiser for upcoming events in 2010. The group would very much appreciate spot prizes and they also need coffee, scones, tea etc for the morning. SPORT AND LEISURE AWARDS: Best wishes to all the nominees in this years Sport and Leisure Awards which takes place tomorrow evening at the Springfort Hall Hotel and best wishes to Hall of Fame winner Dick Griffin who has done trojan work for the underprivileged in the community over many years. LADIES NIGHT OUT: Baltydaniel Parents Association are hosting a ladies night at the school on Friday, March 12 at 7.30pm.

There will be clothes, shoes, jewellry, hair and makeup stands on the night. Admission is €10 and light refreshments will be served. MALLOW ADULT LEARNING CENTRE: For help with reading writing and spelling please contact the Mallow Adult Learning Centre, Top Floor, Parish Centre in Mallow from Monday to Friday between 9am and 1 pm.
