Calcutta bound

TWO YOUNG women are going back to Calcutta this summer to work with the homeless there. First year college students Virginia Wallace and Amy Keane will leave Dromahane behind this summer to help alleviate extreme poverty in Calcutta. Both young women are former St Mary's, Mallow students who visited Calcutta during their Transition Year. Speaking to The Corkman, Virginia recalled the profound poverty that she encountered during her time in Calcutta. "The extreme poverty that I came across was a culture shock for me. Despite everything, the children were still happy. I will never forget the children and the huge amount of homeless people," said Virginia. Before the pair travel to Calcutta this May they will have to raise 2,500 each. The money raised will go towards the HOPE Foundation, a charity that has assisted street children since 1999. HOPE also funds schools, coaching centres, clinics, creches, HIV/AIDS programmes, vocational training and a children's hospital.
