IT is disappointing to learn that there is now a bitter split in the Town Hall chamber between councillors when it comes to honouring one of our own with a civic reception.
For decades this system of paying tribute to a sporting hero, a giant in the community, and the like, regardless of their wage or salary, was ongong and now suddenly there is uproar.
This problem did not arise due to cutbacks in the present economic climate but simply due to differences between individuals at the council table.
This writer attended a few such receptions in the past and it is such an enjoyable hour or so to see someone getting the VIP treatment for past achievements and work for the good of the community.
The personal arguments and the much publicised verbal battles between councillors, who were voted into office just a few months ago by the decent people of Mallow, must stop right now. A proper, agreeable system to honour such people should be drafted and put in place immediately.
Mallow people deserve better.
