Community school students excel at BT Young Scientist Exhibition

RIGHT: Millstreet Community School pupils Andrew Roche, Shane Dineen and Colm Barrett secured a rosette for their highly commended project in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition in Dublin.
A RECORD number of four teams from Millstreet Community School qualified for the BT Young Scientist Exhibition on a staging in the RDS Dublin last week. .
Initially, 1,753 submissions entered, out of that number 550 projects were chosen. The four projects submitted from Millstreet school were accepted in the hugely prestigious final . To feature so prominently confirmed the enthusiasm of students and evidencing the quality of teaching and learning within THE past year saw Millstreet maintain a positive image with numerous highlights and in the third of a four-part series, a look back of July, August and September reads:

Millstreet play host to the Humphrey Kelleher Memorial U15 Football Cup Final. Millstreet Development Group promote Shopping Week. Adult Learning Festival concludes with huge numbers.
Documentary on the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland titled The Forgotten Maggies, directed by Steven O'riordan premiered on TG4. 'Scrap Saturday' collection proved hugely popular as a fundraising vehicle for the newly formed Millstreet Astro Turf Club.
Juvenile footballers, hurlers and camoige players avail of a welcome break on Millstreet Juvenile GAA playing host to a Summer Cúl Camp. The weatherman favours the annual Old Time Threshing and Vintage Day hosted by Millstreet Community School.
The four teams featuring eleven pupils were entered under the Social and Behavioural Science Category. One group, namely Colm Barrett, Shane Dineen and Andrew Roche received a Rosette for their Highly Commended project entitled "Improving access to Roads and Services during severe winter months in the Millstreet Area: - A spatial network analysis approach."

The unqualified success of the Millstreet staging of its All Ireland Horse and Summer Horse Show proved a fitting reward on a staging at the Green Glens Complex. Ice cream and sun lotion emerge the order where favourable weather adds to the positive and cheerful mood at the picturesque location that hosted in excess of 80 events.
Hectic schedule for Millstreet Pipe Band culminates on recital at International Rose of Tralee Festival and the Michael Collins Commemoration at Beal na mblath. Millstreet included "No Limbs, No Limits?" by Joanne O'riordan and Nadine Spillane, "Does Government Legislation Disable Rural Social Patterns" – by Kevin Linehan, Diarmuid Murphy and Donagh Murphy. "The Impact Economic Decline has on Behavioural Patterns" – by Aisling Dennehy, Eleanor O'leary and Hayley Whitby. The teams were mentored by teachers Mr. Shane Guerin and Ms. Jennifer O'donoghue.

Contact between Millstreet and its Breton twin Pommerit le Vicomte progressed on a visit by a Millstreet group to Britanny Success for Millstreet CCE at All Ireland Feadh Cheoil. Colman Culhane succeeds John O'keeffe as Chairman of Millstreet TTA. Cullen opens doot of new National School.
SEPTEMBER: The September Horse Fair maintains a long standing tradition with patrons from all walks of life from near and afar availing of favourable weather to converge and continue a custom dating back many generations. Vibrant Millstreet TTA group collected €1,750 for securing first place in their category of the Cork Co. Anti-litter Competition.
Banteer Gymkhana drews huge entries to its staging in the Green Glens Complex. The Millstreet Tidy Town Association delved into an analysis of its 2011 submission that earned a rewarding four mark increase in the national competition.
Coffee mornings benefits Marymount Hospice. Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann put on a Night of Music, Song and Dance for Culture Night. The buzz at Millstreet Juvenile GAA level continued on the highly successful staging of the Connie Kelleher, Tommy and Alan O'connor Memorial Tournaments in Millstreet Town Park. Set dancing at Aubane resumes. Large entries attend Millstreet Tidy Towns Association Golf Classic. Friends of Mallow Hospital host their annual Church Gate collection.
