Double victory for ladies juvenile teams
Thursday December 10 2009
LADIES FOOTBALL CLUB: Mourenabbey ladies football club end their 2009 football season in a blaze of glory. Having been crowned U14 and U16 county champions at the highest grade earlier in the season, they completed the triple crown on Sunday last, December 6 in Whitechurch when they claimed the U21 A county title against a gallant Naomh Fionnbarra side from Ballingeary/Inchigeela.
After all the atrocious weather it is hard to believe that a pitch could be in such a pristine condition. This led to a fast open game with some superb scores. Naomh Fionnbarra got off to a great start with an early goal which seemed to shock the local girls into action.
They rattled off eight unanswered points only to be hit by another major blow by the girls from the west. The Mourneabbey girls then put one of their own in the onion bag after a great move involving several players. This score gave the Black and Amber a seven point lead at half time.
In the second half the backs were determined that the goal was not going to be breached for a third time and proceeded to out in a colossal performance. A dominant midfield pairing provided the forward sextet with well placed ball, making life difficult for an overworked Naomh Fionnbarra rearguard.
Though Justin McCarthy's charges worked their socks off, the Mourneabbey girls ran out convincing winners in the end.
In her acceptance speech captain, Katryn Coakley paid tribute to all involved in this latest victory.
