Danny Mc Parland of Armagh, one of the all-time greats in the sport of Road Bowling passed away to his eternal reward recently. Physically very powerful he was also very strong willed, the bigger the occasion the better he liked it.

He was the first winner of the All Ireland Senior Championship following his last shot victory over Derry Kenny in August 1963 on the Moy Road on the Armagh Tyrone border.

In 1964 he played Mick Barry in the All Ireland Final at the famous Dublin Hill Road, Cork to take the title in a last shot play-off.

However in 1965 and 1966 Barry was to claim the two All Irelandís off McParland. In 1968 he emerged as the Northern Champion but it was Cork man Johnny Creedon who was to fare out the better in the Final on the Nadd Road. Barry was to take the title against him in a score played at Ballyshonin in 1970.

However when Barry travelled North the following year Danny Mc Parland was to claim his third All Ireland title on the Eglish Road in Tyrone.

He claimed his last title in 1976 with a win over Michael O Driscoll at Ballyshonin.

Danny Mc Parland will always be remembered for his many visits to Cork. Donie Lehane, Jackie Forde and Derry Kenny were amongst his adversaries and one in particular, a charming doubles exhibition in Dunmanway in 1964 was an enormous crowd puller.

McParland came with Aidan Toal, father of current champion Michael to take on Mick Barry and Denis O Donovan, Fisher's Cross and Derry Kenny who doubled with Jackie Forde. Barry and O Donovan were the winners on that occasion. He was a member of the Bowling Hall of Fame and an iconic figure in Ulster Bowling. To his family and friends the bowling fraternity would like to extend their deepest sympathy. December 12, 2009.

Jackpot of €4,000 was not won. Winning Numbers were 1, 2, 6 and 23.

The writers of these notes would like to wish each and everyone of our readers, families and friends a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas. Christmas can be a time of great happiness and also a time of great sorrow and our prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones over the past 12 months

As the weather is very cold at the moment we would appeal to everyone to drop in to elderly neighbours over the Christmas period to make sure that they want for nothing.

'You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.'
