CANON SHEEHAN SHORT STORY AWARD WINNER: Congratulations to local English teacher Mary Angland of Curragh, Kanturk on winning the Canon Sheehan Short Story Award in Donerail Literacy and Arts Festival.

There was tremendous interest in the competition, which drew entries from the USA, Britain, Australia, France and of course Ireland. The judges chose Mary's story for its emotive display of human character, its often-poetic use of language and most importantly, for its ability to linger in the thoughts of the reader long after it was read.

In front of a distinguished audience, which included poet Gabriel Fitzmaurice and writer Ulick O'Connor, Mary was presented with the Canon Sheehan Trophy and a cheque for €1,000 by Billy Keane, son of John B Keane, at the opening of the festival in Creagh Castle on Friday night last.
