Glitzy debs night is summer highlight
MILLSTREET Community School pupils took the opportunity to glam up to the nines for their graduation debs ball. School pupils and friends dressed to impress at their hosting in the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork.
For the special get together, school uniforms were replaced by elegant ball gowns, high heels and dapper tuxedos. A distinct air of glamour surrounded the event as beautiful young ladies accompanied by handsome young men had a night to remember as they dined in style and danced to the beat on their big social event of the year in the Kiltegan Suite.
HORSE SHOW: A festival atmosphere prevails in Millstreet this weekend on the staging of its 32nd Summer Horse Show under the banner of the Millstreet All Ireland Horse and Pony Show. A diverse entry for the bumper six day programme at the Green Glens location sees an array of national horse and pony categories. The splendid Complex is looking never better as the energetic Duggan family and team have combined to develop further improvements within the grounds. Permanent stabling units will cater for in excess of 1,500 horses and ponies with the remainder stabled in outlets throughout the Duhallow Region. Tarmac roadways are in place, a hard court caters for parking for lorries and cars with a tented village encompassing trade exhibits. Entry is free to the public with the action beginning from early in the morning and continuing late into the night. A mammoth 91-event programme is scheduled with 14 arenas including the spacious indoor complex catering for the bumper entries. Of course, Millstreet's reputation as a shop window for the promotion of the Irish horse will again be enhanced in the conforming classes. Buyers will attend seeking trained horses for showjumping across the world to view the highly popular six-sevenyear-old Boomerang, the fouryear-old National Discovery and the three-year-old Young Irelander. As the week progresses, so does the fare. Friday sees the prestigious Lee Strand Young Irelander Final at 7pm. Saturday is devoted Derby Day with the Millstreet Derby commencing at 2pm followed by the popular Speed Derby at 4.30pm. Indoors action is dominated by the prestigious National Discovery Final underway at 7pm. Sunday's action commences with the Ladies Final at 9am, the Millstreet Ruby five-year-old decider at 11am with the popular Boomerang Final scheduled for 1pm. The programme is completed with the Millstreet Grand Prix allowing the best of home grown talent go in search of the premier prizes. Away from the hectic action inside the rings, there is a full compliment of trade stands and events on site. Nightly, there is a feast of entertainment and live music sessions. Outside of the Green Glens Complex, a carnival atmosphere permeates throughout the town. COUNTRY PARK: A massive 50% discount is available on daily admission on Mondays through to Thursdays up to Friday, August 19. To kick start National Heritage Week, Millstreet Country Park are hosting a 'Fireside Tales Session' in the Visitor Centre/Crannog Island on Saturday, August 20. Calling on interested participants, local or otherwise, to join in with a local radio personality and share or tell a story from their childhood, a tale of places they used to visit, reminisce of the people who lived during their life, funny old stories/tales, seanachaí talks, traditional music, old songs and recite poetry. Those present can listen to some local storytellers spinning yarns relating to bygone days in the Millstreet, Duhallow and greater Cork area. Have you a funny old story or tale? Can you play an instrument? Are you a seanachai? Then come along and enjoy the experience.
MUSEUM COLLECTION: A church gate collection this weekend is on behalf of the re-establishment of Millstreet Museum and Tourist Information Centre at the renovated Carnegie Hall in addition to the development of archival accommodation elsewhere. Support for this local service would be greatly appreciated. Funds collected will help to defray the cost of insurance, lighting, heating and the substantial expenses involved in the setting up of the new centre in the renovated setting as well as the accessing of archival accommodation. MACRA FOR PITCH AND PUTT: Millstreet Macra are holding a pitch and putt tournament in Millstreet on this Sunday commencing at 3pm. The entry fee is €5 per person. All are welcome to participate.
