KANTURK CALLING: Gerry clinches angling title

Thursday September 10 2009

KANTURK TROUT ANGLING CLUB NEWS: Sunday September 6 saw the last competition of the season for Kanturk and District Trout Anglers. This competition was held on Lough Leane, Killarney.

The Jimmy O''Connell Memorial Trophy is presented each year to the Angler of The Year after the final competition. This winner is the angler who has amassed the most points in club competitions during the season and the trophy rewards consistency and skill.

The final competition is usually where the title is won and lost and this year was no different. Indeed the trophy was won five minutes before the end of the competition when Gerry O'Sullivan landed an excellent trout that saw him overtake John O'Sullivan in the final s tand ings . Congratulations to Gerry on his fine win in his first season as a member of the club.

The competition, itself was won by Michael Twohig Snr in atrocious conditions. Angler of the year Gerry O'Sullivan finished second and Gerry Cronin finished in third. We also extend our congratulations to Michael and Gerry Cronin on their fine performances.

Yet again the committee would like to thank Bob's bar for their hospitality and for ensuring that, if nothing else, we are the best-fed anglers in the country!

2009 has been a memorable year for the club with members victorious in national and international events. Ann McWilliams had the honour of being the Captain of the victorious home nations team in June. This was the first time that the Irish ladies team won this competition against the three teams from Great Britain.

In May Shane Bird won the Munster river competition, held in Holycross in Co Tipperary. In addition to this Michael Twohig Snr was team captain for the Irish youths team that competed in the CIPS Mouche World Championships in the Czech Republic.

Stars of the show were Diarmuid O'Connor and Liam O'Brien with two goals apiece and Con O'Callaghan who chipped in with a goal to round it off.

Kanturk Youths (U 18's) travelled to Mitchelstown to take on local side Park United. Again Kanturk were missing four or five of their key players and suffered a 4–1 defeat with Tony Nash scoring Kanturk's only goal from the penalty spot five minutes from time.

In Premier A, Kanturk played their first game of the season away to Cork side Greenmount last Saturday and recorded a 3–2 win. What was so pleasing from a Kanturk point of view was that Kanturk achieved this result while missing five of their regular squad and still managed to take all three points. Goals from Tadgh Collins, Colin Stack and Martin O'Riordan and a man of the match performance from Timmy Murphy, which secured a great win away from home.
