U15 Rugby.Sunday's Well 7-Kanturk 41: Kanturk travelled to Cork on Saturday morning in a bid to finish in top spot in the league. Lying a point behind Mallow and the home side, Kanturk entered this game knowing that only a win will do to keep their season alive. The tension was palpable before kick off with both sides wary of each other. In near perfect conditions, Kanturk got the game under way and kicked off to the home side.
Sunday's Well set about attacking Kanturk through their forwards, however, some outstanding tackling made sure the Well never crossed the gain line. Kanturk's forwards now began to exert their influence through Michael O'Brien, Billy O'Gorman and Ciaran Boyce. Kanturk now began turning over opposition ball and this allowed the away side to counter attack through full back Sean Cremin who scored the opening try in the eighth minute which was duly converted by Bill Gorman.
With confidence growing and a solid platform at line out and scrum, Kanturk were now in control and further tries came from O'Brien, Kevin Cremin and Sean Cremin. Gorman added a penalty and two conversions to put Kanturk firmly in control.
The home side added a try and conversion midway through the first half and were beginning to exert pressure on the Kanturk line, however, some brilliant defensive work from Padraig Cremin, Denis O'Donoghue, Denis O'Sullivan, Jack Bradley and Conor O'Sullivan made sure Sunday's Well failed to score again before half time.
The second half saw the home side again attack the visitors but were again stopped by some brilliant tackles. This spirit was exemplified by wings Conor Moylan and Paul O Keeffe who were always eager for work and made some brilliant hits.
After soaking up a period of pressure, Kanturk again regained control through the half back pairing of Kevin Cremin and Mike Cottrell's positional play and this pair combined well to put centre Aaron Daly through for the score of the game. With Alan Cremin as ever looking threatening, Kanturk added another score through Sean Cremin to round off a fine mornings work to leave Kanturk top of section A in the South Munster League.
The reward for Kanturk is a home tie against runners up in section B, Clonakilty, on Saturday at Knocknacolan, kickoff is at 12.00pm and this should be a very close affair with visitors remaining unbeaten during the regular season.
