Live broadcasting on local radio moves a step closer

Thursday March 11 2010

LIVE broadcasting on Ballyhoura Community Radio Charleville (BCR) inched a little closer following a dry run of 12 hours broadcasting on the internet and an open day at the studio in Smith's Lane last week.

Presenters got a taste of what it would be like to work a non-stop radio schedule which included music, a two hour magazine style programme, sport, interviews, items with historical content and programmes catering for every musical taste.

The magazine programme was anchored by two presenters and featured 15 different segments along with music over a two hour period. These included interviews on the draft Cork county development plan's reference to Charleville and the Holy Family School's involvement as finalist in the AIB Better Ireland scheme, along with the forthcoming history book on Ballyhea GAA club.

Also featured was community news from around the franchise area, and interviews and clips from the two Shoestring Theatre Company's 2010 productions 'The Salvage Shop' and 'I Do Not Like Thee Dr. Fell.'

The weekend was a big success both from a technical and presentation viewpoint and station manager Ms Dee Collins was very pleased with the outcome of the exercise. She said it replicated what would be happening when the station goes live on air.

"We are currently finalising our broadcasting licence with the Broadcasting Commission and while that is happening behind the scenes we are busy building the studios, training volunteers, preparing programmes and fund raising," she said.

Forthcoming fund raising events for BCR include a fashion show in the Charleville Park Hotel on Friday, March 26 and a golf classic on Friday, June 11 at Charleville Golf Club.

The radio station is always looking for volunteers to run the station and it is great opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and have fun. If you are interested in becoming one of the production team you will receive training in areas such as, researching, interviewing, editing, presenting, using the desk and in the ethos of community radio; contact 063-30033 or log on to www.bcradio.ie.
