Local youngsters enjoy golf outing

Thursday September 08 2011

DROMTARRIFFE Golf Society held its first golf outing on Tuesday, August 23 at Kanturk Golf Club for all our young boys and girls of the parish and judging by the turn out and indeed by the very fine scores it will go from strength to strength.

Sponsors O'Flynn Medical Ltd Millstreet were very pleased with the whole event and Tadhg O'Flynn presented the prizes to the following:1st Conor Cremin 43pts; 2nd Cian Clernon 40pts and 3rd Con O'Callaghan

Cat one-19: 1st Sean Cremin and 2nd Shane O'Leary. Cat 20-22: 1st Evan Murphy and 2nd Shane McSweeny.

Ladies Prize 1st Emer Feely. All of the above names will most definitely be appearing regularly in the golfing columns of the future along with a lot more Dromtarriffe names from the golfing world of that I am sure thanks in no small way to O'Flynn Medical Ltd Millstreet and indeed to all our other very generous sponsors.

The young golfers thanked Tadhg O'Flynn and the sponsors for the prizes, the food and refreshments before and after and for initiating the first golf outing for the youth of Dromtarriffe. They also paid tribute to everyone who helped in anyway in organizing the event, the staff of Kanturk Golf Club, and of course to their Parents.

Tadhg O'Flynn also thanked everyone involved including all of the above and said he was extremely proud as a Dromtarriffe man to present prizes to the young golfers of the parish and hoped it would be the first of many prizes being presented to Dromtarriffe golfers.

He also stressed how important it is for young people to get involved in sport and with golf being very close to his own heart he was very pleased they have chosen golf as one of their sporting interests especially as the Golf Course is in the parish of Dromtarriffe and hope to see even a bigger turn out of young golfers next time. Photos will follow in the next issue of the Corkman.

COMMUNITY ALERT: A special meeting was held in Dromtarriffe GAA club rooms on Monday, July 4 in connection with The Community Alert Scheme at the request of some concerned members of the community living alone and who felt a bit vunerable.

This meeting was attended by Eamon Buckley, Sean Feely, Ted Daly, John McCarthy, Eugene Healy, Timmy John O'Donoghue, Noel O'Sullivan, Mick O'Connell (Derrinagree) Kieran O'Flynn, Patrick Moynihan and Charlie Drake.

The meeting was chaired by Garda John Crowley. At that meeting a new committee was elected with the election of officers presided over by Garda Crowley.

The following officers elected were Chairman Charlie Drake, Secretary John Mc Carthy, Treasurer Noel O'Sullivan, and all others on to the committee with Pat Golden of the Kilcorney Area along with two more from there co-opted on to the committee later on, as it is hoped that the people of Kilcorney and the surrounding areas will also benefit from this initiative.

After the meeting when we went to register, we were informed by the Department of some small problems as to our being accepted and registered by the now called Seniors Alert Scheme. All these problems are now sorted out and we are up and running.

The new Committee will be receiving application forms in the next few days and will be calling to those who have already registered with us. The Committee would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the delay but it was outside of our control.

We fully appreciate the anxiety of some people as we are facing into the long nights but now that we are up and running we will have you sorted well before the winter.

We have also set up a rapid response scheme in conjunction with the Garda Siochána and in particular with the huge effort being put in by Garda John Crowley he has been with us day and night for the past number of months trying to get this set up.

This new Rapid Response Scheme is something that will have to be explained later at a public meeting which will be organized by the group in conjunction with the Garda Siochana and John Crowley the Officer detailed to the whole Cork North West Area.

This Rapid Response Scheme would take too long to explain in a few words written here, but it will be in everybody's interest to attend that public meeting which will be held in the Dromtarriffe GAA club rooms, details of which will be published in The Corkman in the next week or two.

The new committee urgently appeal to all citizens of Dromtarriffe and Kilcorney who know of any seniors or indeed anyone living in remote and vulnerable places to contact any member of the group.

If you should spot anything suspicious in your area try and get registration number of the vehicle and if possible a description of the person without putting yourself in any danger contact Kanturk Garda Station at 02920680 or any member of the group. Please be alert and look out for your neighbour.
