Michelle is in a race to get Dublin running

Thursday February 04 2010

CHARLEVILLE-BORN Michelle Ring has been given a central role in organising this year's KBC Asset Management St. Patrick's 5K Festival Road Race which takes place in Dublin on Sunday, March 14 next.

Daughter of Michael and Nora Ring, who live at Broghill Road in the town, Michelle will be working alongside race director Eamonn Coghlan, Ireland's former World 5,000 metres champion. She is busy putting arrangements in place for what will be a major event in the St. Patrick's Festival Week programme and the first city street race in a year when Dublin celebrates its status as European Capital of Sport. A marketing executive with race sponsors KBC Asset Management, which she joined in March 2008, Michelle was educated at St. Mary's Secondary School in Charleville. Later, she attended Cork Institute of Technology, from which she graduated with a Batchelor of Business Studies degree before going on to NUI, Galway where she was awarded a Higher Diploma in Marketing Practice.

"We are hoping that the event will attract lots of entries from Cork, from elite athletes and family fun runners alike. That is why we have timed it to enable participants to travel to Dublin and home again on the same day," she said.

The race begins at 12.00 noon from the Mansion House. From there it will follow a route through Georgian Dublin returning to the finish line at the Mansion House.

Thanks to the support of her company, KBC Asset Management, a generous prize fund has been set aside which Michelle hopes will attract record entries beyond the expected 2,000 runners.

This includes a first prize of €1,000 for both senior men and women winners with prizes of €500, €250 and €100 going to 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers in both categories.

Other prize categories include men's and three women's team prizes with €400 going to the 1st place team in each case plus Masters Men and Women categories, Junior Men and Women under 20 and Corporate Teams of 4 runners in any gender combination. Souvenir T-shirts and 'goodie bags' will be given to the first 2,000 entries received.

The race is hosted by Metropolitan Harriers & St. Brigid's Athletic Club in association with Dublin City Council and those interested in taking part can register on-line at www.patricksrun.com or by post to Mary Friel, Hon. Secretary, MSB5K, Unit 2, Coolport, Coolmine Business Park, Dublin 15.

An entry fee of €15 applies to all entries received before March 8th. Late entries will also be taken up to 11am on the day for a fee of €20 with a reduced rate for families.
