AS the 58th North Cork Drama Festival gets underway on this Friday night, we take a look at the tradition of stage presentations in Charleville town and focus on one such dramatic production from 1936.

The three act play was entitled 'The New TD' and it was staged at the Parochial Hall in aid of the local Confraternity Brass & Reed Band. The names of the cast members will recall those associated with these stage shows and evoke many memories, especially for the older generation, of this bygone era when there was little in the way of entertainment save for these presentations. The members of the cast of 'The New TD' were Tim Ryan, Nellie Scanlan, Maura Carroll, Tom O'Dwyer, Josie Ryan, Jim Maloney, Mick McGrath, Ted O'Riordan, and Patrick Ryan.

As was usual in those days there was also a variety concert to follow the play and this was provided by the brass and reed band under the then conductor P J Carroll. Joe O'Donnell provided the comic songs and sketch, Mrs. Bridie Connolly played the piano accordion, Corney Scanlan sang humorous songs. Also, pupils of the Moyhihan School of Dancing danced while Miss A Moynihan played violin and Miss Tessie Carroll rendered a song and clog dance.
