It confirms the growing interest in equestrian sport as a recreation amongst children and teenagers evident by the 3,200 strong entry accepted for the three day hosting commencing on Friday and continuing through Saturday and Sunday. NEW PUBLICATION: The latest from the Aubane Historical Society concentrates on a love story set in Millstreet and written in 1905 by one of the best known writers of the day, George Egerton. Its titled "The Marriage of Mary Ascension." Her real name, Mary Dunne, had lived in a cottage named 'Ardrath' near Millstreet for some time (1892-1894), and the story is based on her experiences here. It is an unsparing account of the town and the people in it.
From an enlightening publication, amongst the areas she suggests is that the town had a previous Gaelic name that meant "the little town in the lap of the hills."
The publication is currently available from Wordsworth in the Square and other outlets for €5.
GAA: A late flourish allowed Millstreet finish strongly to overcome Lyre in the Duhallow Junior B Football League Group 2 Final played in Millstreet.
Backboned by some staunch defending, Millstreet rallied magnificently in the closing five minutes to overcome a two point deficit and come home with a late flourish to collect league honours for the first time since 2005.
Lyre had looked good enough to succeed before faltering on the run in, enjoyed a flyer of a start on a goal netted. Millstreet offered flashes of potential with Robert Kelleher and James Broxton on target.
The momentum remained with Millstreet from the untiring efforts of Cormac Sheehan, Donal O'sullivan, Liam O'connor and Donal Cashman. A pair of points to O'connor and another to Kelleher swept Millstreet into a slender advantage. However in the concluding stages to the opening half, Lyre made the better use of possession and pointed frees helped secure a 1-3 to 0-5 grip.
The game lacked sparkle upon the resumption, some of the play scrappy with the scoring rate dropping significantly. Though Millstreet tied up matters from Robert Kelleher, Lyre looked capable of upping the tempo and well struck points appeared to put Lyre in the driving seat.
Millstreet's resolve was tested yet they responded calmly and efficiently. Points to Robert Kelleher and Finbarr Corcoran squared up the tie. And with the game in the melting pot, Millstreet had that more left in the tank and points from Kelleher completed a rewarding late flourish.
Millstreet lined out as Denny Twomey; Patrick Randles, Martin Kelleher, Cormac Sheehan; Donough Mccarthy, Donal O'sullivan, Donal Lenihan; Liam O'connor, Donal Cashman; James Broxton, David Mccaul, Liam Murphy; Robert Kelleher, Darren Sheehan, Kieran Sheehan. Sub. Finbarr Corcoran.
