Tributes pour in for a Clyda stalwart, Johnny O'Sullivan

Thursday March 26 2009

LAST Saturday one of the stalwarts of Clyda Rovers the serving Club President Johnny O'Sullivan, of Clashmorgan, passed away.

All club activity over the weekend was suspended as a mark of respect for our Late President.

The Sullivan family was synonymous as one of the most sporting in the parish throughout the years. They were instrumental in setting up the Mourneabbey Boxing Club in the 1930s located at the site of Mourneabbey Creamery. Johnny's brother Paddy was the first Irish person to win the Golden Gloves Boxing Competition in Chicago.

It was Johnny who was one of the founding members of Clyda Rovers GAA Club in 1957 when the club changed its name from Mourneabbey to Clyda.

He provided spins to matches when they were hard to come by and supported Clyda through thick and thin. Along with his brothers Eddie and Mick they backboned the club in the early years. It was fitting that Johnny Was nominated president in 1991 a position his father Ned had previously served.

When he was nominated as president for the second time in 1997 It was an historic time for the club as we were playing senior football for the first time in it's history.

Johnny had seen the club go from Junior 'B' to Senior and took great pride in this achievement.

It was notable that right up to the time of his death Johnny was president of Clyda for last 12 years. It was fitting the club provided a guard of honour at his removal to Analenntha church, and members of all ages paid there respect for a great Clyda man.

The club passes on our sympathy to his brother Mick and sisters Bridget and Kathy and many friends and relations. The club would also like to pass on its sympathy to the Cronin family also on the death of Br Philbert Cronin who also played for the club in the early years.

He along with his brothers wore the black and amber with pride. Br Philbert served in many posts throughout his time in the religious and teaching order such as Rome, Ballyvourney and Castlebar.

The last few years he was serving in the Pastoral Centre in Castletown in Loais. We pass on our sympathy's to both families. Ar Dheis De go raibh anam.
