Well-deserved win for Lyre in Ducon Cup

Thursday March 11 2010

DUCON CUP: Lyre finally got their Ducon cup campaign facing in a positive direction with a win over Kanturk at the weekend. A game which they well deserved the two points from, started well after an opportunist goal from Jack Roche on five minutes after a misplaced shot from his brother Denis. The only other score of the half coming on the 13th minute from Ger Mannix, indeed it was the defence of both teams which prevailed in the opening 30 with Martin Kearney and Coleman Mannix displaying some effective work.

Kanturk managed four points in the half to leave the matters all square at half time.

In the second half Lyre opened up, Rory O'Connor and Brian O'Driscoll got a point each up the restart, both well taken scores in their own right, Kanturk then followed with a point, on the 34th minute this happened to be their last score of the game. Rory O'Connor and Tim Murphy raised white flag each, with enormous credit going to midfielders Colm O' Riordan and Timmie Murphy to maintain this purple patch.

O'Driscoll added a 45 to improve matters; this came soon after an inspiring Aidan Murphy save denying Kanturk a sure goal from point blank range.

O'Driscoll and Mannix got one more each to put the tie beyond doubt. Lyre 1-8 Kanturk 0-5.

The Under 21 championship will restart this weekend or possibly St. Patrick's Day with a tough tie against Millstreet in Rathcoole. The lads over came a spirited Kilbrin side in round one and many of the players involved have been getting vital experience in the Ducon Cup, namely Rory O'Connor, Coleman Mannix and Keith McGeogh all showing well recently.

Millstreet will test every avenue but rest assured if all goes to plan these lads may have enough to emerge the correct side of the result. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
