FOLLOWING the granting of planning permission by Cork County Council, work is due to commence on the refurbishment of a large part of the basement in the parochial house, which is located adjacent to Charleville's Holy Cross Church.
The basement of the house, which was once known as Richview House, has lain unused for many years. The house was acquired for the parish in 1877 by Fr James Rice, who was parish priest of Charleville from 1873 to 1892, and has been the residence of successive parish priests of Charleville since then.
Fr Rice purchased the house from a Mr Magrath, a protestant solicitor in the town, who had bought it in 1846. The house was originally built adjacent to the Zion Church, on which site the present Holy Cross Church stands; the foundation stone for which was laid in 1898 and it was dedicated and opened in May 1902.
When work is completed the basement area will be used for parish offices and it will also have a meeting room, toilet facilities and a kitchenette and will have independent external door access at basement level. The refurbishment has the approval and support of the diocesan houses committee and of the local parish finance committee.
