The €30 lucky dip winners were Liz and Mark c/o Paddy McCarthy, Thomas Foy c/o Club, J. J. Buckley, 1 Sean Moylan Park c/o Margaret Buckley and THIS writer remembers an incident from the good old days which came to mind once again recently while reading an article on the Belgian-born actress Audrey Hepburn.
It was back in the good old days of Mallow's two cinemas 'Above' and 'Below'. In the 1960s Bill Robinson's Capitol Cinema (Above) in Fair Street and Eddie Donovan's Central Cinema (Below) on Tuckey's Hill were prime venues for the teenagers of the time to meet and queue in the 10 penny rush which, in time, increased to a much talked about 1/6d.
In that era of cinema entertainment we had the feature film to look forward to and always a supporting film, which was normally a B Movie, many of which were dull and forgettable.
During this time, Kevin Aherne, a friend and neighbour, and myself sat in Bill Robinson's cheapest seats (The Pit) with our crisps, ice pops and a Woodbine in the top pocket to view the classic Con Horgan (Taxis) c/o Anne O'Neill. The numbers drawn were 1 - 3 - 24 - 25.. The jackpot is currently at €5,500. Spinning the wheel on Tuesday, November 3 was Maggie Murphy ,3 Emmet Street c/o Paddy McCarthy. Admission €12. thriller 'Wait Until Dark' which starred Miss Hepburn and Alan Arkin.
During a tense scene which featured zHepburn as a blind girl shuffling about in her pitch dark apartment being closely watched by an intruder, my quick-witted friend Kevin pulled matches from his pocket, lit one and raised it in his right hand for everyone to see in the cinema. The audience went wild with laughter.
Suddenly, I was hauled out of my timber seat and ushered with much haste to the door and on to the street and warned not to come back.
While all this was happening my 'culprit' friend sat and enjoyed the rest of the film. Some days later Bill Robinson approached me and apologised for his actions after he was reliably informed of my innocence on the night.
Kevin was never reprimanded and for years after we both enjoyed many a good 'flick' at Robinson's cinema — without the matches, of course. The death took place at Mallow General Hospital of Ellen (Nell) O'Hanlon, Firville on Wednesday October 28. She is survived by her husband Gerald, relatives, neighbours and friends. Her burial took place in St. Gobnait's Cemetery after 12 noon Requiem Mass in St. Mary's Church on Friday October 30. To her husband and family we express our deepest sympathy.
