Bubbly Joanne is fitting recipient of youth award

MILL - STREET'S Joanne O'riordan will merit a special achievement award at the West Cork Garda Youth Awards this Friday night in Acton's Hotel, Kinsale. 15 year old Joanne (pictured) suffers from the disability Total Amelia — born without arms or legs — yet her bubbly enthusiasm sees Joanne actively involved in Millstreet Community School and community events. The special achievement category was open to any young person who has defied the odds, overcome difficult circumstances, and whose commitment deserves recognition.
In her teenage years, Joanne has promoted a positive awareness of disability and is involved in sport, drama, the Young Scientist exhibition, school trips, the school magazine and visits to the elderly. The awards celebrate outstanding young people between the ages of 14 and 21 years. Besides recognising outstanding youth work, the awards seek to provide the Gardaí with great community spirit and goodwill. SELF BUILD SHOW: The Millstreet Self Build Show returns to the Green Glens Complex this Friday, Saturday and Sunday featuring new products and technologies to enable and promote sustainable building practices throughout Ireland. With the price of home heating oil doubling within a year and utility bills rising by double digit percentages, nearly everyone is feeling the effects. To achieve thermally efficient or alternatively using natural sources of energy are some of the concepts from the latest products and technologies that come under scrutiny at the Millstreet Selfbuild Show. The show opens on Friday at 1pm and continues to 7pm. On Saturday and Sunday, opening hours are between 11am and 6pm.
TRIP TO INDIA: Millstreet Community School chaplin John Magee formed part of a five member Irish delegation that visited India during the mid term break to support the MDG 15 programme. This is an EU funded project involving development agencies in the developed and less developed countries. During their stay, the Irish group ran workshops with teachers in the Indian state of Jharkhand around the eight Millennium Development Goals. The India NGO called AROUSE (Animation Rural Outreach Service) facilitated the initiative. AROUSE is a non-denominational development NGO run by the Jesuits of the Ranchi province of the Society of Jesus. It caters for all the poor of the Indian state of Jharkhand, irrespective of caste and creed. GAA: A special function lauding some successful teams takes place on Friday, November 11 in the Wallis Arms Hotel. Apart from applauding winning teams, the staging will salute Club Person of the Year and Young Player of the Year for the newly inaugurated Tadgh Moynihan Memorial Trophy. Millstreet GAA express thanks to those who supported their clothes fund-raising initiative. GRAVE YARD CEREMOMIES: A short service for the dead will take place in each of the graveyards on Sunday, November 13 after which the candles can be lit for placing on the graves. Candles are available in local shops . The Cullen Graveyard Ceremony is immediately after the 10.15am Mass in both graveyards Millstreet Church Graveyard operates immediately after the 11.30am Mass, St. Mary's Cemetery at 12.30pm and Drishane at 12.45pm. CULLEN PIPE BAND: Cullen Pipe Band are currently in the midst of a recycled clothing drive. The band will be accepting used clothing in good condition, soft toys, shoes, handbags and mobile phones for recycling. Collection dates are Friday, November 12 from 7-9pm; Saturday, November 13 from 10am-12 mid day and Sunday from 10.45 to 11.30am at the Cullen Community Centre. Proceeds from the venture will support new initiatives underway by the award winning Cullen Pipe Band. TAEKWON DO CLUB: A large number of Millstreet Taekwon Do students attended the Friendship Tournament in Kanturk recently. There was a huge amount of competitors present from different clubs and students from the Millstreet club came away with many medals on the day. Some students were competing for the first time and were delighted with their own performances. LTV RETURNS: LTV2 Millstreet is back on air from this Thursday at 10pm with repeat programmes on Sundays at 8pm. Test transmissions will take place before the broadcast season begins. The channel will be available on UHF Channels 48 and 50 and also on VHF Channel 12. Some of the programmes will in addition be uploaded on the Millstreet website. The LTV2 Supporters Club will help to fund the voluntary, community-based local television service. LTV1 (Muskerry area) is also back on air from Wednesday, November 9. This season's programmes features local news happenings and share recordings from various locations within the local community to the greater Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra and further afield to the National Ploughing Championships and Britanny. DAY CARE CENTRE: Millstreet Day Care Centre provides a meal service for those who are not in a position to cook regularly for themselves. The centre caters for diabetics, coeliacs, low fat and other special diets. Meals comprising soup, dinner and dessert can be booked on a long or short term basis and delivered piping hot to the subscriber's door. JUVENILE GAA: Millstreet Juvenile GAA Club extend their deepest sympathies to the family of the late Paul Herlihy of Herlihy's Centra who has generously sponsored the club over the past year.
