THE unexpected departure of a West Cork presenter at radio station C103 means the catchment area for North Cork host, Patricia Messenger, has doubled.
David Young was the radio presenter of West Cork Today for the past five years, but last Thursday he gave his last broadcast. In addition, to what is regarded as this unexpected departure, receptionist Donna Deasy, who worked at the station for the three years, has also departed.
The Corkman spoke to CEO of Cork 96Fm and C103, Kieran McGeary, who said "for the moment" he doesn't envisage further changes or cuts. However, he did say that the medium of radio was "changing all the time" and management reviewed their broadcasting procedures on a continuous basis.
When asked if the tanked economy had played a part in the axing of the popular radio host, David Young, he said: "The economy has played a part as there is a difficult economic situation at the moment in the country."
However, he felt that Patricia Messenger now hosting a joined West Cork Today and North Cork Today was following in the footsteps of a strategy whereby the station broadcasted just one drive-time programme and just one evening show.
"This is just another aspect of stream-lining. What we have done is nothing out of the ordinary.
"We continually assess what we are doing, as radio is constantly changing," said Mr McGeary.
