Composer hitting all the right notes

AN award-winning piece from the pen of Fermoy-born composer Solfa Carlile this week made its Irish premiere at the country's most prestigious music venue.

Last month Solfa, who is based in London, won the coveted Jerome Hynes Composers Competition for her work Sounds, a stunning piece for voice and piano.

Set to a poem of the same name by Brendan Kenneally, the threeand-half-minute piece was performed for the first time in Ireland last Monday night at Dublin's National Concert Hall by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Tara Enright.

A delighted Solfa said it was an amazing experience to hear her work performed at the venue.

"Although I am based in London I am very much an Irish composer, which shows in my work," said the 24-yearold. "As a young Irish composer it is very important to me that my work is recognised in Ireland and it doesn't get any better than the National Concert Hall."
