THE first ever World Rescue Challenge in Ireland takes place in Cork this weekend.

The event will bring over 400 visitors to the region and is estimated to bring over €100k in revenue to Cork over the three days.

With up to thirty teams taking part, The World Rescue Challenge is an international Fire Services event that involves national rescue organisations coming together from every corner of the globe, including the USA, South Africa, Russia and Europe, in a competition to enhance, maintain and improve emergency procedures and techniques for dealing with road traffic collisions.

Cork was chosen over a host of other cities bidding for the International event due to the compactness of the city, access to Europe and world transport links, variety of accommodation and leisure options available, not to mention Cork's growing reputation as one of the friendliest places to visit in the world (as voted by Lonely Planet 2010).

The successful bid was won in association with the Cork Convention Bureau who were able to assist with resources, liaison with national and local stakeholders, assistance with bidding process and general liaison point between Hospitality and Facilities Providers and Conference Organisers, Rescue Organisation Ireland.

Members of the public are very welcome to go along and watch the rescues which will be taking place at the Port of Cork site, Custom House Quay, Cork City from 8.30am – 5pm each day from Friday to Sunday. For further information visit www.corkconventionbureau.com
