THE tragic death of a young man in a drowning accident has spurred family members to start a major fundraising campaign for Mallow Search & Rescue Unit.

An intensive search was carried out by the Mallow based unit last November for the body of Ballyvourney man, Brian O'Tuama, who was later found in the River Lee.

Mr O'Tuama's family are now trying to raise €20,000 to help purchase a new boat for the search and rescue unit.

Speaking to The Corkman, Colmán O'Tuama, expressed his deep gratitude to the volunteers in Mallow Search & Rescue Unit who never gave up on the effort to find his brother's body.

The search and rescue unit now has five boats, one of which is 22 years old. It is hoped to replace the old boat with a new one in memory of Brian O'Tuama.

" Mallow Search & Rescue were consistently helpful to us during the search for Brian's body. It is a great service for the Munster region. We want to express our gratitude and help other families," said Colmán.
