Fermoy set to get the Google street treatment
FERMOY is set to come under the watchful gaze of the world thanks to the controversial Google Street View online application.
This after the Google street car was spotted in the town over the past few days taking pictures of the locality. Puzzled onlookers watched as the car, complete with its periscope stile cameras, dove around the town taking images of everything in its path.
It is one of a number of cars driving around towns and cities across Ireland taking panoramic images of roads and house, which will then be stitched together to provide a complete 3-D online image of the locality.
While the application has proven to be a massive hit with googlers, it is not without its critics who have sparked arguments over people's rights to privacy.
Although the service does not provide moving images it does give users the impression that they are walking down streets and looking directly at house.
This has led to fears that it could be used by burglars intent on targeting homes.
However Fermoy residents need not worry quite yet as the images of the town are not expected to be online until early next year.
