Flush of one toilet valued at 25 cent
Thursday March 11 2010
THE flush of a toilet has been valued at 25 cent - and Cork County Council is calling on the Department of the Environment to introduce a scheme to fund the collection of rainwater for household purposes.
The proposal was put forward at a meeting last Monday by Independent Councillor Noel Collins, who noted that this method of water collection was employed in a more crude manner to great effect in Dublin in the 1950s: "Surely it's not beyond our capabilities to advance the system of harvesting rainwater.."
Supporting the motion, Councillor Timmy Collins noted: "It's a shame we use treated water, which costs a lot of money, to flush toilets and wash cars."
Highlighting that the cost of flushing a toilet is 25 cent, Councillor Veronica Neville said: "There is an opportunity for the council to educate people about the cost. We are going back to the barrel outside the door."
When Manager Martin Riordan said that he would support a pilot scheme of rainwater harvesting, Councillor Noel Collins quipped: "I hope we won't have to wait for the second coming of Moses to see it implemented."
