'Good people are like angels for us'
Thursday March 11 2010
NORTH Cork communities continue to rally around a Millstreet based Polish family whose baby, Jacob, was born last September with a very rare condition that deprives him of his sight.
Little Jacob suffers from anophthalmos, a congenital condition that has resulted in him being born with no eyeballs. Without highly specialist treatment, Jacob will grow up with severe facial malformations.
Early treatment is necessary for Jacob and the local community pulled together to raise funds to help his parents, Wiola and Mariusz Nowak, to pay for the vital medical procedures that began in Germany prior to Christmas.
A follow up visit to Germany takes place this week and Wiola and Mariusz can take comfort from knowing that baby Jacob is held in the thoughts of so many people. That's confirmed on €5,134 raised in Meelin as a follow up to a fundraising walk organised by St Marks and St Peters Juvenile GAA clubs. Adding to the success of the venture, proceeds from a disco also supported the cause.
A formal presentation took place in Quinlans Bar, Meelin, where Baby Jacob's dad Marius, joined by trust representative Thomas Duggan, thanked the terrific gesture by organisers Nora Shine, Bridget Kelly, Dan Curtin, John Collins, Kieran Linehan and Timmy Collins.
"Thanks to everybody for the help, every word of support, prayer and financial assistance. Good people are like silent angels for us who lift our spirits when we feel down and during our most difficult moments, give us faith and hope that everything will be fine", said Mariusz.
