Millstreet seeks three hours free parking
MILLSTREET Development Association want to have three hours free parking in the town in order to curb any further economic decline hitting businesses.
At the recent Kanturk Area meeting, Cllr Noel Buckley (FG) submitted a letter from Millstreet Development Association, who want to have three hours free parking in the town.
Cllr Buckley (FG) said "Millstreet is no different to any other town which has suffered devastation since the recession took hold.
"Parking is a big issue for every town and what they want is to have free three hour parking," he added.
He also said they wanted to make the text on the signs for parking made bigger so people in the town will know that there is now free parking.
Cllr Gerard Murphy (FG) agreed with the proposal and said the three hour parking in his native Newmarket has worked very well.
He said it had, meanwhile, created a deterrent for motorists from dropping off their cars in the town and leaving them there for the day.
He added, jokingly, that a female councillor had originally put forward the three hour time frame as women would need that "amount of time to get their hair done".
Cllr Buckley said that traders needed every assistance from the council to make sure that their towns were firmly open for business, and free three hour parking would be an added incentive.
Pat Cotter, Area Engineer said that as far as he was aware, the signage was of a regulatory size, but he would look into and review Millstreet Association's request.
