Probe into hospital death

Thursday February 04 2010

GARDAI have launched an investigation into the death of an elderly North Cork woman who was found strangled with a television flex at St Stephen's Hospital in Cork on Sunday afternoon.

The woman, who it is understood was in her 70s, was found by staff and taken to CUH where she died on Monday. Superintendent Pat Sheahan said detectives were awaiting the results of a postmortem, which would then determine if they were dealing with an accident or foul play.

The HSE is also investigating the woman's death. A spokeswoman said that a patient at the hospital had died "after what appears to have been a tragic accident."
