Rathcoole girl Maria wows judges at 'Bake-Off' in Dublin

Grandmother and grand daughter Mary and Mary Margaret Buckley, Rathcoole, Mallow, receive their certificates for reaching the finals of the Big Bake Off from Age Action deputy chief executive Lorraine Dorgan and Eddie O'Toole of event sponsors Bluebird...
A YOUNG school girl proved to have the Midas touch when she took part in 'Age Action's Big Bake Off,' in Dublin last week when she wowed the judges.
Mary Buckley who is just 11 years-old rolled up her sleeves and competed against six other adult contestants, the oldest which was an 87 year-old nursing home resident from County Meath.
Mary, who is from Rathcoole used a recipe given to her by her grandmother, Mary, who was at hand to supervise her whipper-snapper grand-daughter. The Big Bake Off challenged the public to bake, ' What Grandma used to make,' and to look to long loved family recipes for inspiration.
"We were hugely impressed by all entries, and especially the quality of the finalists, it is not an easy talk to bake live in front of judges in a strange kitchen, but all eight finalists today did themselves proud," said Judge, Eddie O'Toole, operations director.
He said that although Mary was the youngest contestant, she made a huge impression with her baking and did herself and her family proud. The overall prize was won by a group of nursing home residents from Bray, County Wicklow.
