Scrap metal helps revamp community centre

There's money in muck: Members of the Castlemagner Community Centre Committe James Twohig, Paddy Mccarthy, Kathleen Moylan and Michael Lucey with Castlemagner GAA officers Stephanie O'leary, Thomas Lenihan and Denis Gayer.
A MAJOR scrap metal drive in Castlemagner has netted €10,000 to help revamp the local community centre.
In a joint venture between the GAA club and the community centre committee, at least 25 local people rolled up their sleeves and got down to work by collecting and selling on scrap.
Alan Gould, PRO of Castlemagner GAA, club told The Corkman that they got a number of old cars, including a battered Morris Minor as well as tractors into the bargain.
The community centre is currently in the middle of a revamp which is also partially funded by IRD Duhallow and Cork County Council.
The community centre will receive €5,000 out of the scrap metal collection and this will go a long way towards the upgrade of the hall. It is hoped the work will be completed for April.
"We are really delighted with the money collected, especially in these tough times. It was our first time doing the scrap metal collection and it has really paid off," said Alan.
They began collecting the scrap just before Christmas and the last collection occurred in the second week of January.
