THE Sinn Féin party is urging people across the Cork North West area to take part in street protests this weekend aimed at highlighting the crippling unemployment crisis across the region.
Protests will take place in Kanturk, Charleville and Macroom between 12.30pm and 2.30pm next Saturday afternoon.
Party spokesman Micheál Hurley said that the protests are a result of the anger felt by local people over when they feel is the lack of a government strategy to tackle the issue.
"The action is a direct response to the government inaction on the whole issue of job creation. A particular concern for us is the high rate of unemployment among young people across the region," said Mr Hurley. "It is clear that the recent cuts in social welfare combined with the lack of retraining and 'back to education' opportunities will leave many young people with no other option but to emigrate," he added.
As part of their campaign protestors will be urged to sign postcards protesting at the lack of government action on job creation, which will then be forwarded by the party directly to the Taioseach.
"We are calling on the government to take immediate action and are urging the public to make their feelings known to those in power," said Mr Hurley.
"All people have to do is sign a postcard, we will do the rest," he added.
