Smurf is Millstreet hope for Oaks glory

A Millstreet dog goes in search of prestigious honours in Clonmel next week in the participation of Cleanaway Smurf in the Hotel Minella National Greyhound Oaks. Under the watchful eye of Con O'Connor from Ballydaly, Smurf has impressed in her performances this season and is considered as amongst the leading contenders for outright honours and the €35,000 prizemoney. A winner in the pre-qualifying stakes at South Clare, Cleanaway Smurf performed the business though Clonmel is very much the mecca for all coursing enthusiasts with the action sure to be hugely competitive come next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Mushera climb
Aubane Social club took time to acknowledge a fund-raising venture from one of its familiar hostings. All participants in the club's annual climb to the summit of Mushera Mountain were applauded for venturing out in impressive numbers to support the traditional staging and helping the Millstreet Church Restoration Fund. Aubane Social Club Chairman Gerard McSweeney commended the involvement in excess of 150 participants who made it one of the most successful undertakings by the club. Favourable weather added to the occasion in a venture growing in success. In reply, Restoration Chairman Denis Lane and Canon Declan O'Connor expressed gratitude on the generous subscription toward the church funding. The Church project commenced last April, the work focusing on the exterior, concentrating on long needed repairs to the fabric of the building. Also included in the €2.9 million project is the revamping of the former Nun's Choir to accommodate a Prayer Chapel, Meeting Rooms, Toilets and wheelchair access.
Sinn Fein
Cork North West Sinn Fein host a function in the Wallis Arms Hotel on this Friday night. Music is to Johnny Donegan and the Irish Rebels with entertainment from 9.30pm. The prize-winners in the party's recent fund raising draw at the Malpaso Bar were Shane Browne, Drishane Road; Connie O'Mahony, The Bridge; Pat Joe Hickey, Cullen and Dan Crowley, Minor Row.
Boxing
Millstreet was well represented in the Rylane Boxing Club hosting in the Aghabullogue Hall. Rylane club have built up a reputation for such hostings and again a full house enjoyed the fare on offer. Amongst those competing were Sean Og O'Connor, Eric Barrett and Adam O'Donoughue from Millstreet. A collection from clothes to soft toys to medicines is underway for the lesser foruntate in Gaza. The collection point will be at the Youth Centre, on January 28 and 30, from 7 –9pm. Glen Theatre
One of the most exciting comedy performers and hailed by both the national press and public alike, Jason Byrne is a must see comedian and his appearance in the Glen Theatre on this Friday night is sure to generate interest.
Unislim
Unislim remains open in Millstreet community centre on Wednedays at 5.30pm. To encourage patrons, Unislim will return €10 if a patron loses 10lbs in 10 weeks. Scór
The Duhallow Senior Scór finals go ahead on this Saturday night in Kanturk Golf club at 8.30pm. In this the 40th Anniversary of Scor's founding, Millstreet will be represented in a number of categories.
Horse show
A one day horse show takes place in the Green Glens on this Saturday night. Organised by the Irish Draught Horse Association, the group are intent on preserving the draught breed which was so much part of our lives until they were replaced by the tractor in the sixties and seventies. It will be a day full of horse events, demonstrations and talks.
Pantomime
THE Rathmore Marian Players presentation of 'Mother Goose' continues to this Sunday, February 1 in Rathmore Community Centre. Those associated in the production are maintaining a long and valued theatrical tradition from the Sliabh Luachra Region of North West Cork and East Kerry. An all star cast from both sides of the county bounds promise to serve up the best of entertainment to suit young and old. Seats can be prebooked from 064-58526.
Publication
The latest publication from Aubane Historical Society is "The story of the Moving Bog" by Joseph Dinneen. This is a contemporary account of the 'Moving Bog' phenomenon that occurred near Rathmore in the early hours of 28th December 1896. It was written by Joseph Dinneen, the brother of the 'Dictionary man', Pádraig Ó Duinnín. The content is a well written but curious account as it clearly indicates a hope that the tragedy could be utilised for the benefit of the area by being turned into a tourist attraction that would complement the attractions of the Lakes of Killarney. The publication is available at Wordsworths in Millstreet and McCarthys in Rathmore for €10 per copy.
Pilates
Pllates classes operate in the Wallis Arms Hotel on Tuesday nights from 7.30 - 8.30pm followed by a second session between 8.30 - 9.30pm. The classes operate for six weeks. Further information and booking entry is available from Siobhan at 087 9224665.
