World darts maestros target Kilbrin exhibition
TWO legends of the darting world will visit a north Cork village next weekend to take part in an exhibition, in what is sure to draw a huge crowd to the area.
Kilbrin Social Club presents Simon 'The Wizard' Whitlock and Colin 'Jaws' Lloyd on Saturday, September 11, at 8pm in the local sports and social club.
Local man and part of the organising committee, Paddy McMahon told The Corkman that it was inevitable that the event would take place again this year, following the success of last year.
"Last year was such a success that we decided to hold the event again," Paddy said. "Denis Priestley and Andy Hamilton visited last year and the night was a great success."
The idea was the brainchild of another local man, Nicholas Corkery, who along with Paddy and the Kilbrin darts team, decided to first organise this event in 2009. History was made, as it was the first darts exhibition in Kilbrin.
300 spectators packed into the superb Kilbrin social club venue, where Priestley and Hamilton thrilled the audience with their superb darts playing. Afterwards, fans met their heroes and the two lads posed for pictures and signed autographs galore.
"The exhibition next weekend was always going to happen following the success of last year," Paddy added.
"This year, the exhibition is being organised by Nicholas, myself, the Kilbrin darts team and the Kilbrin Social Club, and we are hoping that the night will be as successful as last years."
Australian Simon Whitlock has been playing darts since 1984. He is renowned for his big finishing and superb checking-out, and is currently ranked sixth in the world rankings. 'The Wizard' was runner-up in the 2008 BDO World Championships and the 2010 PDC World championship to Phil 'The Power' Taylor.
A former world champion, Colin Lloyd was the 2004 World Grand Prix Champion, the 2005 World Matchplay Champion and the 2007 Master of Darts winner. He is also a former world number one.
