Young stars shine as Fantasy dance show wows the crowds
THE long-awaited Spotlight production The Fantasy Show took place last Thursday night to a packed Mallow Youth centre. Youth worker, Robert Green did his chances of a career in the entertainment industry no harm at all with his lavish entrance as MC for the night, but despite Robert's best efforts, there was no doubt who the crowd were there to see.
Dancing of the highest calibre entertained the audience for over two hours, with complex routines and some outstanding singing from Orla Clancy singing Lady Gaga's Poker face and Stacy Nagle with Snow Patrol's Run.
Aymann Scuffins, who choreographed the show, also gave a live performance of two songs that he has wrote himself, and with his second movie, Cassie and the Crystals due to premier in September, is there anything this young man cannot do?
A big congratulations and thank you to all who took part in what was a brilliant night, especially the brilliant choreographers Aymann Scrffins and Audrey Reilly, as well as the whole production team.
CDYS SOCCER: The CDYS Summer Soccer tournament came to an end with all the finals being played in front of a very vocal Mallow crowd.
All games were highly contested in the right spirit and a great evening was had by all, with The Woodview Community Group supplying refreshments for everyone at the end of all the games.
As well as the finals being played, there was also a match played between the u18 winners and a youth workers select team. After a hard fought 1 -1 draw the match went to penalties, where the Youth Workers were just beaten by a Steven Jones penalty.
But, everyone who took part in all of the matches were winners with the way they conducted themselves. The young players should be very proud of themselves.
Youth worker Gillian Creed (who organised the whole tournament) said it was a fitting end to a great summer of soccer.
"We owe so much thanks, not only to the young players but to all the volunteers who helped throughout the summer," Gillian said.
"Events like this wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for the help we've received. We are blessed with the volunteers we have at CDYS and even though the event wasn't held in Woodview Drive, the community group came down and helped make tonight possible. It just shows what great community spirit we have in Mallow"
CAMPING TRIP: CDYS have been working with a group of lads in Woodview Drive for over three years now, so it was about time we put our trust in them and vice versa on an adventure trip away.
The trip consisted of a four hour canoe journey up the river Bandon to find the camping equipment and dry clothes, followed by a longer hike into the woods to find camp.
Once a clearing was reached we had to put up tents, build a fire and cook food.
Everyone had a job to do and everyone mucked in brilliantly. The first day finished with a BBQ around the camp fire with everyone understandably tired from the first day's activity.
The second day consisted of abseiling, archery and a zip wire. On the way home the young lads were never so quiet, even the youth workers admitted that it was very tough going.
Robert Green (youth worker) said "it's important that we push ourselves every now and again and these kind of trips are ideal to do this and for the young people to build up trust with each other and with us."
CDYS would like to thank not only the Kinsale Outdoor Education Centre for looking after us on this trip but we would like to thank Garda John Hurley ( JLO) and volunteer Claire Murphy who joint us on this adventure.
