PREMIER Intermediate side Kiskeam pulled off a surprise yet merited win over Aghada in the County League Division Two played at Rostellan last Sunday. When required, Kiskeam produced a performance brimful of commitment and resolve, not least in the second half to overturn a four point deficit and emerge good value for victory.

Kiskeam operated with plenty of early potential yet their shooting was sluggish and Aghada 'keeper Andrew O'Donoughue emerged alert to thwart dangerous situations. Aghada settled and with Pierce O'Neill seen to good effect, the hosts broke the deadlock from a Cian Fleming point.

Kiskeam endured an onslaught of pressure yet a defiant full back line gave little away. And from a breakaway attack, Kiskeam came close to a major but Robert Carroll chipped over the crossbar.

Aghada kept up the pressure and though wayward shooting proved a downer, Kieran O'Connor capped a fantastic run up the wing to find the target. Further opportunities were lost before points to Michael Russell, Eoin Healy and Fleming gave Aghada a 0-5 to 0-1 advantage at the interval.

The writing appeared on the wall for Kiskeam yet they began to show strong conviction, rewarded on three pointed frees from substitute David O'Leary. At times, the game appeared to be coming down to a free taking competition between O'Leary and Fleming.

The latter converted to push Aghada ahead 0-8 to 0-4, O'Leary quick to respond at the opposite end before Kiskeam mid fielder Michael Herlihy broke the sequence of free taking to point.

A goal followed and it arrived at a more opportune time, David Scannell delivered a precise ball into corner forward Carroll who managed to slot the ball low to the ground neatly past Aghada keeper O'Donoghue.

Aghada piled on the pressure with a vengeance in search of a reprieve but the Kiskeam defence supported by mid fielders Padraig O'Leary and Michael Herlihy dug deep and closed the game out.
