Clyda Rovers minors edge past Macroom
CLYDA Rovers held out for a close win over Macroom in the Ulster Bank Co MAFC quarter final at Blarney on Sunday last. Very little separated both sides for long periods being level at four times by the 22nd minute. Rovers with a late pointed free by Cian O'Sullivan edged ahead at the break 0-5 to 0-4.
Rovers maintained a slight advantage on the restart and moved 0-8 to 0-5 ahead after 10 minutes play. Rovers had a goal by Daniel O'Callaghan and when 6 points clear they looked like being comfortable winners after 43 minutes. They had outstanding displays by Christopher Buckley, Conor Flanagan, Kenneth Fitzgerald, Conor O'Sullivan and Cian O'Sullivan.
Macroom made a massive comeback, they reintroduced Andrew Hegarty who was replaced at half time. Good combined play and great passion saw the Macroom side kick some massive points by Andrew Hegarty, Tony Dineen, and Colm Casey that had them within a point entering the last 5 minutes. Macroom came very close to a goal being denied by the woodwork. Tony Dineen levelled for the only time in the second half in the 59th minute.
Extra time looked very likely with both sides having some chances. Deep in injury time Clyda Rovers forced a sideline kick that Conor Flanagan placed to his midfield partner Conor O'Sullivan who cut through to kick the all important point and give his side a place in the semi-final.
