Disappointing start to Shield for Killavullen

Thursday March 04 2010

KILLAVULLEN had a disappointing start to their Kelleher Shield campaign when they went down by five points to Glanmire at Killavullen on Sunday.

The opening half was evenly contested with the sides level at 0-1, 0-3 and 04. Declan Dorgan opened the scoring with a pointed free for the home side. Fergal O'Reilly levelled soon after with Declan Dorgan giving the Avondhu side the lead again with another free. Good work in the 14th minute by Declan Dorgan led to a great point by Ian O'Gorman. Glanmire worked the short passing to good effect and Chris Cummins put O'Reilly through for another point. O'Reilly again added another point but it was Killavullen who forced level in the 27th minute when good work by Colm O'Connell and John O'Regan led to a well taken point by Daniel Luddy 0-4 each at the interval.

Glanmire were forced to replace the impressive Michael Cussen for the second half. His replacement Mark Hopkins took over at full forward with Kevin Burns going to midfield. The East Cork side took control in the half backline and midfield sectors and the forwards carried the ball to good effect and took some very good scores. A series of points early on by Kieran Kenneally, Kevin Burns and Brendan O'Callaghan had the winners ahead 0-7 to 04 after 42 minutes play. Killavullen missed a few chances and had their only score of this half a pointed free by Declan Dorgan at the end of the third quarter. Glanmire continued to do well, good work by Paul Goggin and Chris Cummins led to a fine Kevin Burns point 0-8 to 0-5.

The Avondhu side forced a close in free but Glanmire keeper Brendan O'Connell saved very well from Dorgan. The winners finished with points by Mark Hopkins and Kieran Kenneally to emerge deserving victors in the end.

Best for Glanmire Michael Cussen, Brendan O'Connell, Brian Murphy, Brendan O'Callaghan, Declan O'Connell, Fergal O'Reilly, Kieran Kenneally and Kevin Burns.

For a youthful Killavullen Sean O'Regan, Edmund O'Connor, Ian O'Gorman, Colm O'Connell and Bartley Hayes were best.
