Fermoy too crafty for Glanworth

KELLEHER SHIELD Fermoy 0-9 Glanworth 0-5

Thursday March 11 2010

IN an all North Cork Kelleher Shield Section four encounter, at Fermoy, on Wednesday evening last, the home-side took the points at stake when they were deserving winners over Glanworth. Going into the game both teams had won their opening round game and they were keen to maintain their winning ways.

However, Fermoy were the sharper side for most of the game, showing the greater urgency going forward and were to find scores easier to come by. They were quick into their stride with Michael Hennessy, Jack Hutchings, Ruairi O'Hagan, James O'Sullivan and Noel Crowley making an early impression and after 12 minutes raced into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead. Glanworth were to find the Fermoy defence very hard to break down on a number of occasions and were most unlucky not to have a goal in the 22nd minute when a long free by Michael Sheehan went inches over the crossbar for a point. Instead, it was Fermoy that carried the ball well out of defence while Tomas Clancy and Jack Hutchings were commanding figures at midfield and by half-time they moved double scores in front when Trevor Grumbridge (two) and Tomas Clancy kicked over to move 0-6 to 0-3 clear.

On the changeover, Glanworth started in a positive manner with Sean Finn placing Michael Pierce for a well taken point to reduce the deficit to just two points. Last years, Evening Echo Co. JAFC kingpins were unable to push on from here and instead, they were to concede a number of unnecessary frees that were punished by Ronan O'Callaghan while Jack Hutchings also had a point from play to move Fermoy into a 0-9 to 0-4 lead by the 42nd minute.

In a low scoring last quarter both teams were to introduce a number of substitutes. Exchanges were close enough to a certain extent. Glanworth went in search of a goal to set up an exciting finale but it was not to be as they registered just a point from a Michael Sheehan free in the closing moments. In the end Fermoy ran out deserving winners to make it maximum points from their two games played in the current league.
