IT'S not just the local economy that's set to benefit from this week's 3 Irish Open - the tournament's chosen charity, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, is the benefactor of two initiatives being held during the event to continue funding the charity's bighearted gestures.

Purple Day will be held on Friday at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, in aid of the charity, which grants wishes to children aged three to 18 with life-threatening medical conditions.

The purple-themed day will see players and spectators donning the shade, be it a simply a hat or from top to toe. Purple 3 Irish Open caps will be on sale with all proceeds going to the charity.

Golf brand Kartel has teamed up with Pádraig Harrington, Make-AWish's Irish Ambassador, to sell special edition polo shirts at the event to raise money for the foundation through the Pádraig Harrington Charitable Foundation. The special edition shirts will be on sale at the Kartel Stand in the sponsor's village for the duration of the event.

Three-time Major champion Pádraig said: "The initiative from Kartel is a great way to raise funds for Make-AWish Ireland, a charity very close to the hearts of myself and my wife, Caroline."
