Powell rides Out All Night to win Newmarket Derby for Dromahane owners

FAVOURITE Out all Night justified shortened odds to capture the Newmarket Derby, the feature event to the Horse and Pony Racing Association Rules meeting that proved an unqualified success at Newmarket Races last Sunday.
Ridden by up and coming jockey Brendan Powell, the winner confirmed recent form to give connections Finbarr and Kathleen O'Shea of Dromahane plenty to enthuse.
Punters gathered in numbers for a summer feast of racing, the event hailed a huge success by organisers. A sense of sheer excitement emerged for the large attendance with owners, trainers, jockeys and racing fans making a return to the picturesque track.
Pony racing launched the careers of many successful jockeys in Ireland and England with Norman Williamson, Charlie Swan, Adrian Maguire, Barry Geraghty and Jamie Spencer becoming household names. Derby winner
Derby winning jockey Powell is sure to join the establishment. A son of well-known Lambourn trainer Brendan, who holds strong Cork connections, the younger Powell will join the Richard Hannon stable at the end of the season.
From the Newmarket Derby, named in memory of former dual winner Mr. Lucky, Powell delivered a competent ride on Out all Night to fend off the intentions of Sir John( Shane Fitzgerald) and Wonderful Tonight(Ross Coakley).
"We 're thrilled with another terrific performance. A small bit of cut in the ground helped and we're looking ahead to Dingle", said owner Finbarr O'Shea.
The card designed to cater for a variety of interests saw many entries use Newmarket as the platform to the upcoming Ballabuidhe and Dingle Races. Derby runner up Fitrzgerald from Buttevant enjoyed better fortunes in the 15 hand on guiding home Amy's Magic for the Hayes family of Shanagolden.
Churchtown jockey Seamus Cronin did the bookies a favour to steer home outsider but an impressive winner in Grey Skull. The Local Pony race belonged to Star ridden by Denis Linehan of Glantane. The Newmarket Open Mile developed into a two way confrontation, Euro King ridden by Shane Gray snatched matters for the hosting connections of the Three County Syndicate on finishing ahead of Central Park.
Gray a firm favourite on the Newmarket track teamed up with West Corks champion, Che Guevara to give Castle Racing from Dunmanway much to cheer about.
The full programme was completed in good time and the firm grass track at Drominarigle met with an overwhelming response.
