Thursday March 11 2010
APPRENTICE jockey Martin Lane from Kilworth Fermoy, who has just returned to England from a most successful winter racing season in Dubai, made the best possible start to the coming flat season in England last weekend where he had three winners on Saturday at two meetings, Southwell in the afternoon, and Wolverhampton at night.
He was aboard General Tufto in the 1mile class 5 handicap, where he held his mount up in the early stages, and made smooth headway 3 out, as the field bunched, he wisely switched left over 2 furlongs out, and closed right up. Produced to lead with a furlong to race, he stayed on strongly, to win easily by 4 lengths, for trainer Clive Smith who trains at Temple Breur Lincolnshire. He went on to win the 2ml event on Benedictine Spirit for in form trainer PD Evans. The 9/2 shot winning by 11/2 lengths.
At Wolverhampton night meeting, he was again seen at his very best, on 12/1 chance Mr Funshine, in the class7, 5furlong handicap. Held up in mid division, he hugged the inside rail, and made his winning move with 2 to race, hitting the front with a furlong to race, he was just nudged out, to win easily by 1 3/4 lengths, for in form trainer Derek Shaw, who trains at Sproxton Leicestershire.
