Trainers Walsh and Murphy triumph at Mallow Races
Thursday August 05 2010
THE concluding stage of the hugely successful twoday August weekend Mallow races on Monday saw local trainers John Joe Murphy and John Joe Walshe, and amateur James Carroll all visit the winners enclosure.
Bandon trainer Murphy saddled his second winner of the two days, where his charge Matchbook reaped the rewards of consistency, hitting the front two out to win well.
Murphy, speaking to The Corkman reflected "he has been very consistent, and has been a long time trying to win a race, but today was his day. My jockey David Splaine gave him a splendid ride. I told him to wait and wait. We may go to Wexford on Friday night for a similar race."
Doneraile, Mallow trainer John Joe Walsh was on the mark with Diamond Shower, which ran well when fourth to Dusty Trail at Galway earlier in the week. He was produced with precision timing by Innishannon jockey Kevin Coleman, who was making a welcome to action with his first winner since braking his collar bone, which has kept him out of action for the past few months.
Trainer Walsh told The Corkman: "I have been trying for the last two months to get him into a hurdle race. I just thought that this race might come a bit too soon after Galway, but he did it well. We will try and get him in to a similar race shortly."
The next meeting at Cork Racecourse Mallow takes place on Sunday, August 22.
