Failure to take goal chances cost Kilgarvan says O'Donoghue

MISSED opportunities was what Kilgarvan physical trainer and club secretary Tadgh O'Donoghue was left to rue at full-time as he reflected on the outcome of last Sunday's defeat to Fermoy.

"We had two goal chances in the first half and we didn't take them. When you get opportunities at this level you have to take them because they will come back to haunt you," he told

He also admitted that the fortuitous nature of Fermoy's goal was a cruel blow in the closing stages and also felt the longer Kilgarvan went without a score in the second half it was also going to be difficult.

"I think the three points they got at the start of the second half really settled them. We didn't get those opportunities unfortunately but in the overall context of things I would say that I'm happy with how we performed today," O'Donoghue said.

Kilgarvan's efforts in this competition over the last four years have really been heroic and while O'Donoghue admits that time is against the club in terms of the age profile of the players but is still positive about the club's future.

"Senior hurling is probably a bit beyond us at the moment but you have to remember we're missing six of the team from last year's final.

"If you look at our record in this competition over the last four years that we've competed in it, we've won two out of six matches and considering we only lost by four points here today, I think we proven that we can be very competitive at this level and who's to say we won't come back again next year and have a good crack at it once more."
