Hurling

Tossing aside Kelly an act of sheer lunacy

Thursday January 05 2012

THE definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. When Justin Mccarthy took out that big old broom of his, and swept out from his panel quite a lot of talented Limerick hurlers, it backfired. Spectacularly. When Denis Walsh did likewise with Sean Óg Ó háilpín it too backfired. Not nearly as spectacularly, but the still relatively new Rebel boss lost respect for casting aside an aging, but still perfectly useful hurler.

If that wasn't warning enough new Waterford boss Michael Ryan has decided to follow suit by axeing the utterly brilliant Eoin Kelly from his squad for the new season. Kelly, by the way, is just 29 years of age. If he has nothing left to offer Déise hurling then I'm a monkey's uncle.

Concerns over fitness and his failure to meet certain standards are the cited reason for his departure, but still is Ryan so inflexible as not to be able to accomodate a talent such as Kelly, even if he's not 100% fit? People are blue in the face from talking about hurling being a 20-man game so if Kelly's not fit to start anymore you can't tell me that he's not good enough to come off the bench and make an impact?

A poor call by a rookie manager.
